It was no easy task to develop a predecessor to the "little mouse", the popular pre-war Fiat 500 "Topolino" The brand new Fiat 600 was to be a completely new car and one of the biggest successes for the Fiat motor company.

The small engine had good torque thus compensated the lack of speed. The tail-engined Fiat was water-cooled. The rear engine gave the car some pros like bigger interior space and less weight. With the wheels working separately the handling was great compared to its competitors at time.
